Government to Bring E-Commerce Under the Ambit of Tax

February 22: The government has prepared the ‘E-commerce National Strategy’ draft, which is in the final stages, to regulate the e-commerce sector of the country.

According to Nawaraj Dhakal, spokesperson at the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies, the government is working to bring the sector under the regulations to properly supervise the e-commerce platforms.

Currently, the government doesn’t have database of the e-commerce companies operating in Nepal. According to a member of the committee formed to formulate the draft, a survey of the ministry shows that there are more than 50,000 e-commerce companies in the country.

Currently, e-commerce platforms like eSewapasal, Daraz, Hamrobazar, Bhatbhateni, among others are digitally operating in the market. However, the government is yet to bring these platforms under the ambit of tax.

The cabinet, two months ago, had decided to form a committee led by commerce secretary to formulate a draft to regulate the e-commerce sector.
