SC Concerned Regarding Use of Embossed Number Plates

March 28: The Supreme Court (SC) has inquired about the security concerns related to the embossed number plates from the government. The apex court raised the issue following complaints that the use of embossed number plates in vehicles leaves the owners vulnerable as the neighbouring countries get the information about the users. The SC issued an order to the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers to furnish details regarding the security concerns and technical aspects of the embossed number plates.

A full bench of Chief Justice Cholendra SJB Rana an justices Deepak Kumar Karki, Kedar Prasad Chalise, Meera Khadka and Hari Krishna Karki issued the order to the government to present the details to the court.

The order issued by the SC on March 22 was delivered to the concerned government office on Wednesday, March 27.

The government had introduced the embossed number plates from August 17, 2017 by discarding the old number plates that has been in use since ages. It is mandatory to write the numbers in English is such number plates. The chip used in embossed number plates is believed to weaken the  security system of the country by sending vital information to the neighbouring countries.

Arguing that the government had violated the constitution by removing Nepali alphabets from the number plates, environmental  activist Bharat Basnet had filed a writ petition at the SC on February 18, 2018.
