Workers Threaten to Protest Against Unilever Nepal after Losing Jobs

May 22: Employees of two companies affiliated to Unilever Nepal have threatened to initiate protest programmes after the closure of the two companies rendered hundreds of workers jobless. The employees made such announcement during a press conference in Hetauda on Tuesday, May 21.

Hundreds of workers have remained jobless since a year after the affiliated  companies producing soap, surf and shampoo under the Unilever brand stopped production. The companies were reportedly closed after Unilever unilaterally ended the agreements with them all of a sudden.

Unique Soap and Chemical Pvt Ltd which produces products of Unilever brand on sub-contract basis for the multinational company has remained shut since the last one year. Another company, Ganga Soap and Chemical Pvt Ltd, which also manufactures products for Unilever has been closed since the last six months.

The employees working at the two companies complained that they were hard hit by the sudden decision to close the two companies. They have demanded proper compensation. Around 500 workers have been rendered jobless after the closure of the two companies, according to the employees.
