Call for Air Safety, Tribute Ride in Memory of the Victims of PIA Air Crash

September 21: To mark the 25th anniversary of Pakistan International Airlines crash in 1992 in Nepal, and to call for making the air space safe, Rupak Memorial Foundation (RMF) is organizing a bicycle ride on September 23, Saturday to the PIA Memorial Park, Lele.

The ride will start from RMF building in Satdobato to PIA Memorial Park, Lele covering 24 kilometers altogether and conclude at the RMF, reads a press statement issued by the foundation.

The foundation plans to organize a candle lightening program to pay tribute to all the deceased passengers. A short instrumental performance will be played by Team Sarangi.

“We are anticipating 150 riders. We are also trying to encourage deaf bicycle riders to participate inorder to mark the International Deaf week. We are also providing few free registrations to women riders,” the foundation said in the statement. 

At the RMF a short interaction program will be organized on Airspace Scenario in Nepal. The objective of holding the interaction program is to promote air safety in Nepal.  

We invite the friends and family of the deceased of the PIA (Airbus A300B4-203) and other bicycle enthusiasts to join the ride and be a part of interaction program to promote air safety in Nepal.

The speakers of the program will be Sanjiv Gautam, director general of CAAN; Heman Arjyal, aviation enthusiast, and a representative from the Airlines Association of Nepal. 

According to the foundation, the event is supported by well-wishers, Buddha Air, Real Fruit Power, Star Hospital, Hamro Kitchen, Project Sarangi, Pangro and TSN Corporation, Key Advertisement.

Rupak Memorial Foundation (RMF) is a non-profit oriented organization founded in 1992 to commemorate the contribution of national talent late Rupak Raj Sharma. Late Sharma was not only a brilliant serviceman but an exceptional and accomplished sportsperson too. His name is associated with football as he served as the captain of the Nepali national football team for fourteen years and after retirement, continued to be in the football field in the capacity of referee. He was the first Nepali to get his referee license from Federation of International Football Association (FIFA). 

On September 28, 1992, Pakistan International Airlines (Airbus A300B4-203) crashed in Lele en route to landing at Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu killing 167 passengers onboard, including Sharma. It was the 100th airline crash with more than 100 casualties in the history of aviation.
