Veteran Journalist Malla Passes Away

October 6: Veteran journalist and former administrator Shankar Bahadur (Layal) Malla passed away on Monday, October 2. He was 83. His body has been donated to Kist Medical College as per his wish. Family sources informed that the body has been handed to the Lalitpur-based medical college for practical research purposes in medical studies. His final rites were performed at Pashupati Aryaghat by incarcerating an idol made of ‘kush,’ a plant considered sacred in Hindu religion, symbolising his physical body.

Malla had donated one of his kidneys while he was still alive. His eyes were also donated after his death. As per his wishes, it was decided to perform Malla’s final rites only for five days instead of the usual 13 days.

Malla relieved his widow and son from wearing white dress after his death. He even instructed his family members to donate money to the poor instead of spending it in funeral feast.

Malla is the father of Sayap Ashok Bahadur Malla and father-in-law of Justice Sapana Malla Pradhan. Malla was born on BS 1991, Jestha 29.

Founder of the Nepal Independent Journalists’ Association, he worked as assistant editor in Samikshya Weekly and also held the posts of Development Officer and Block Development Officer during the Panchayat era.
