Agreement to start Feasibility Study of Monorail Service

May 28: The concept of monorail operation in Kathmandu took a concrete step on Friday, May 25, with the signing of an agreement with between government authorities and Chinese representatives. China Railway 25th Bureau Group Co Ltd and Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) signed the agreement to carry out feasibility study for operating monorail along the Ring Road of Kathmandu.

KMC Mayor Bidhya Sundar Shakya and the Chinese company's General Manager Li Hongqi signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on behalf of their respective organisations.

Following the agreement, the metropolitan city forwarded the procedure for the feasibility study of operating monorail along the 27-km Ring Road. The monorail is expected to ease the traffic congestion of the Kathmandu Valley.

The company will submit the final report of the feasibility study within six months, said Li Hongqi. 

Shakya claimed that the monorail will come into operation during his tenure.

Mayor of Lalitpur Metropolitan City, Chiri Babu Maharjan, said that monorail will cover around 10 km of Lalitpur. He expressed his commitment to create appropriate environment for its operation in the area.
