Nepal Mediciti introduces ECMO technology

June 22: Nepal Mediciti has introduced Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) technology, which provides temporary contingency support for patients with special care and support for heart and lungs.

According to the hospital, ECMO treatment procedure is in the initial phase in Nepal. Nepal Mediciti Hospital announced it is capable enough to treat patients with quality service.  In the initiatives of specialist doctors of Nepal Mediciti Hosapital, the technology has played an important role in saving the life of the aluminum phosphide disordered person recently, the hospital said in a statement.

The statement further said that the exterior pumps and oxygenators in this technology remove carbon dioxide from the blood and add oxygen back to the patient's circulation. This device can help heart, lungs or both the organs. Experts say the mortality rate of poisonous patients is extremely high up to 97 percent but can be minimized up to 36 percent with the ECMO support. 

In other case with complicated pneumonia, swine flu and bird flu, which are considered as impossible, ECMO has provided successful remedies for patients in many other countries, the statement further said. Also during transplanting the organs of human body, ECMO helps to provide temporary support to both heart and lungs.

The most common conditions that may require ECMO are congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH), birth defects of the heart, Meconium aspiration syndrome (MAS).
