NMA Preparing ‘Peak Profile’ of Mountains

September 20: Authorities in Nepal are preparing to make available details of over 400 mountain peaks identified as suitable for climbing. Nepal Mountaineering Association is all set to prepare ‘peak profile’ of 414 mountain peaks with the objective of providing information of the mountains in a managed way.

NMA informed New Business Age that it will be preparing the peak profile with the permission from the government within three months.

Director General of the Department of Tourism Dhundi Raj Ghimire said that the process of readying peak profile has reached the final phase.

“It is not that we do not have information about the peaks. But this time we are trying to make it more systematic,” he said.

According to him, the peak profile will contain detailed information about the mountain peaks including their height, climbing routes, location, expedition cost, time required for climbing, among others and all these information will be available on website.

Ghimire expressed his belief that this would make climbing easier.

After the profiles get ready, the information will be available on the websites of Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Department of Tourism and NMA.

NMA’s President Santabir Lama said that 3 million people can view the profile at once. According to Lama, the process of preparing profiles of the peaks started some four years ago.

The list also includes profiles of 86 virgin peaks, which have never been climbed before. The government is also planning to open those peaks for climbing once the profile becomes ready.
