2018 a Historic Year in View of Tourist Arrival

December 31: Nepal achieved a record number of tourist arrival in the year 2018. The year was indeed am encouraging year for the tourism industry which saw a resurgence of tourism three years after the devastating earthquakes in Nepal.

Nepal welcomed more than a million tourists in the first 11 months of 2018, a feat never before achieved by the country.

According to Nepal Tourism Board, 1,001,930 foreigners visited Nepal as of November 2018 since the beginning of this calendar year. It is an increase by 17 per cent as compared to the corresponding period of last year.

Most of the tourists visiting Nepal are from India followed by China. Dipak Raj Joshi, executive director at Nepal Tourism Board,  said that it was historic indeed that Nepal was able to bring in one million tourists in the 11 months of this year, according to a report published by Rastriya Samachar Samiti (RSS).

“This has encouraged tourism,” he said.

Besides India and China, the USA and the UK top the list of countries contributing tourists to Nepal.

NTB has maintained that the promotional programmes organised in China and India targeting Nepal's tourism helped attract more tourists this year, RSS further said.

In the previous year, the total number of tourists arriving Nepal was around one million while the figure was 753,000 in 2016.

“Besides, the contribution of domestic tourists could not be ignored to the escalation of the entire tourism business. The tour and expedition culture is being developed among the Nepalis,” RSS wrote.

Lately, several new tourist destinations have been identified and people are being encouraged for visits. The government has identified 100 tourist destinations and announced for their promotions.

The government has also declared to celebrate the year 2020 as the Visit Nepal Year with the target of bringing in two million tourists.
