Floods cause Losses worth Billion Rupees in Province 1 and 2: Industralists

July 16: The incessant rainfall since last Thursday has badly affected the industrial corridors of province 1 and 2. Industrialists say they suffered losses of over a billion rupees due to floods and inundation.

According to the industrialists, the floods swept away the raw materials as well as readymade goods causing massive losses.

The floods have affected three districts – Sunsari, Morang and Jhapa - of eastern region the most.

The floods have wreaked havoc in almost all the industries along the Morang-Sunsari industrial corridor, which houses some of the prime industries of the country in Biratnagar, Tankisinuwari, Duhabi, Sonapur, Khanar and Itahari.

Although some industries have started operation since Sunday, most of them are yet to start operation, according to Chamber of industries Morang (CIM).

Senior Vice President of CIM, Suyash Pyakurel, informed New Business Age that they are ascertaining the exact amount of losses incurred by the industries in the aftermath of the floods.

The floods have especially affected jute mills, sugar mills, soap industries and factories producing noodles and colours. The goods prepared by these industries have been declared unfit for sale due to seepage of water, said Lilam Basnet, chairman of Sunsari Chamber of Commerce and Industries.
