January 28: The global import of full-sized sculpture in 2018 was worth US$ 4.07 billion (Rs 463 billion), according to ITC Trade Map. India alone imported sculptures worth US$ 120 million (Rs 13.74 billion) during the review period.
Nepal has also been exporting sculptures regularly. But the size of export is small. Although the global market for full-sized sculpture is massive, Nepal has not been able to take advantage due to lack of long-term policies on production and export of sculptures.
The sculptures produced in Nepal have their own uniqueness, and the country can establish its own brand in the international market with adequate promotion. But the government should ensure preservation of art and culture and focus on institutional development of this form of art.
