For the second year in a row, Kathmandu University School of Management (KUSOM) was named the best business school of Nepal at the 5thNewBiz B Schools Conclave and Awards 2019 organised by New Business Age Pvt Ltd, the publisher of New Business Age monthly magazine and Aarthik Abhiyan National Daily, on June 21 at Hotel Annapurna.
Among 1,833 management colleges from across the country, KUSOM managed to claim the top spot which was based on 22 evaluation criteria set for determining the best management college in Nepal. “Producing required human resources for entrepreneurship and job market has been the strong base of the college for its achievement,” the jury panel of the awards process noted in its decision.
This is the fourth time KUSOM has won the Best B School of Nepal trophy. Previously, the college lifted the trophy in 2013, 2014 and 2018 editions of NewBiz B Schools Conclave and Awards (formerly known as NewBiz National Rating-Ranking-Awards).
Since its inception in 1993, KUSOM has been offering a range of management programmes at undergraduate (BBA and BBIS (Bachelor of Business Information System)), postgraduate (MBA/EMBA), MPhil and PhD levels. The management wing of Kathmandu University has been playing a vital role in making management students familiar with the corporate sector through collaborations with different business houses and corporate institutions. Likewise, KUSOM has been guiding its graduates towards entrepreneurship through business incubators.
Besides, the publication of journals, qualified faculty members, networking and collaboration with alumni, proper infrastructure and exposure programmes for the students add to the strengths of KUSOM.
Altogether 29 colleges were awarded in seven different categories: 10 colleges eacg in MBA and BBA categories and five each in MBS, HM (Hotel Management), BBS and public college categories. As some colleges got into the top ranks in more than one category, the total number was only 29. Similarly, one best college from each of the seven provinces was also honoured. Among the selected educational institutions, 13 best colleges including one best college from each category and each province were awarded with trophies and certificates. Other 33 colleges which remained at the top ten or top five positions received certificates in their respective categories.
Apart from being named as the best MBA college, KUSOM also managed to bag the award of the Best BBA college. Meanwhile, Nepal Academy of Tourism and Hotel Management (Public), Aadikavi Bhanubhakta Campus (MBS), Asian Institute of Technology and Management (Hotel Management), DAV College (BBS), were selected as best management colleges in Nepal in their respective categories.
In the province-wise category, Aastha College (Province 1), Birgunj Public College (Province 2), Presidency College of Management Sciences (Province 3, outside Kathmandu valley), LA GRANDEE International College (Gandaki Province), Tilottama Campus (Province 5), Midwestern University School of Management (Karnali Province) and Kailali Multiple Campus (Sudur Paschim Province) were also awarded trophies and certificates.
Since 2013, New Business Age Pvt Ltd has been giving out awards to business colleges in recognition of their efforts to help foster management education in Nepal. This year’s edition of the event saw the award ceremony being conducted in even better ways maintaining a high level of impartiality, transparency and professionalism in the selection and evaluation processes.
This year, the criteria for the selection of the colleges were extended to factors including Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA), social media observation, collaboration or association with any national, regional or international institutions, student tracer survey, usage of teaching-learning software, quality assurance certification (QAC) etc. The five-member jury panel comprised personalities from a diverse field who have been well-known over the years for professional excellence in their respective areas.
Former government secretary Er Kishore Thapa headed the jury team where Shailendra Raj Giri, managing director of Merojob.com, Bina Rana, managing director of Humsikha Consultancy, Bkesh Pradhanang, managing director of Jade Consults and former government secretary Mahasharm Sharma served as members. With continuous improvements over the years, NewBiz B Schools Conclave and Awards has earned recognition for being an impartial and biased-free event and an important platform where educators, members of academia, business leaders, top private sector professionals and eminent government officials converge to discuss the quality of management education in the country and to celebrate the excellence in education achieved by Nepali business schools.
The incorporation of panel discussion session under the theme “5WH of Management Education in Nepal” was another highlight at this year’s edition of the event. The panel discussion moderated by Siddhant Raj Pandey, CEO of Business Oxygen, Nepal’s first private equity fund, was attended by Hemraj Dhakal, managing director of IME Group, Ashish Tiwari, Vice President of ACE Education ventures and Bimala Rai Poudyal, member of National Assembly at Federal Parliament.
The 5th NewBiz B Schools Conclave and Awards started after the event’s Chief Guest Khaga Raj Baral, secretary at Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, lighted the traditional panas.
Speaking on the occasion Baral said, “Management graduates are required not only in the BFI and corporate sectors. They are also needed in bureaucracy and politics to lead the country. A large number of Nepali graduates depart for abroad annually. The government issues around 60,000 no objection certificates (NOCs) to the graduates who look to other countries for further studies and migration.If the human resource produced by domestic management colleges are utilised in bureaucracy, we can correct the overall system.”
