Is it Safe to Fly During Pregnancy?

BY NewBiz Team

Flying during pregnancy can be an anxious experience as you are not only thinking about yourself but also the safety of your little one. If you need safe travel during these times, you must do a double check of the policies and safety procedures taken by the airline of your choice to ensure a safe experience for both of you. Buddha Air has a well-thought-out guideline designed to make flights for pregnant women safer.

There are designated timelines that you must consider when booking your flight ticket while pregnant. The second trimester is considered the best time to fly. Most importantly, before flying, throughout all trimesters, it is recommended to consult with your doctor or gynaecologist to be extra secure. If you are travelling within the first 28 weeks of pregnancy, you will not need a medical certificate.

Once you reach 29 weeks, a medical certificate is necessary to confirm your fitness to fly. You can get a medical certificate from your local doctor claiming that you are the specified weeks pregnant and it is safe and healthy for you to fly at this time.

The required medical certificate should be signed by your doctor or attending midwife, or attending next of kin on a registered clinic or hospital letterhead. It should be issued within seven days of the travel date, clearly stating whether it is a single or multiple pregnancy, the number of weeks, the expected delivery date, and fitness to fly, and should be easily understood in English or Nepali. You will be asked to show the original certificate and submit a copy of the certificate to the counter while purchasing your ticket. While, if you are beyond 37 weeks pregnant for single pregnancies, or beyond 33 weeks pregnant for multiple pregnancies, you are not allowed to fly for your own safety reasons.

Buddha Air provides special assistance when you are booking tickets and as you proceed to submit the medical certificates. At the same time, the airline has made multiple efforts to ensure a safe and welcoming experience for everyone. By conducting campaigns like ‘Making your Motherhood Special’ and treating soon-to-be moms with self-care gift items, flying while pregnant has never been more welcoming.

Buddha Air is known for prioritising a safe and welcoming flight experience for all its passengers. Through impactful campaigns like 'Making Your Motherhood Special’ and treating soon-to-be moms with thoughtful self-care gift items, Buddha Air is making flying during pregnancy an exceptionally welcoming and memorable journey. The airline's commitment to creating a warm and caring environment resonates in every aspect of the travel experience, leaving passengers with a lasting sense of appreciation and comfort.

When embarking on air travel with a little one on the way, it is crucial to thoroughly review and follow the policies and safety measures implemented by your local airline.

Travel tips for expectant mothers:

1. It is advisable to travel with a companion, seated next to you for assistance.

2. Make sure your companion has emergency contact numbers.

3. Request an aisle seat for easy movement and bathroom access.

4. Don't fasten the seat belt too tightly, ensuring it's always fastened during turbulence.

5. Keep copies of medical records and certificates in your carry-on for easy retrieval when needed.

In the case of a single pregnancy, no document is required during the first 28 weeks. From the 29th to the 36th week, a medical certificate is needed. After the 36th week, travel is not permitted. For multiple pregnancies, no documents are required for up to 28 weeks, a medical certificate is needed from the 29th to the 33rd week, and travel is not allowed after the 33rd week.
