The 220/132 kV substation, part of the Marsyangdi-Kathmandu Transmission Line Project, officially came into operation on Tuesday, December 31, 2024.
Located at Markee Chowk in Aanbukhaireni Rural Municipality, Tanahun, the substation has been constructed using advanced gas-insulated system (GIS) technology, according to the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA). With its activation, the 82-km transmission line has now become fully operational at 220 kV capacity, ensuring efficient and stable power transmission.
NEA Managing Director Kulman Ghising highlighted that the necessary infrastructure to transmit electricity from the Marsyangdi River corridor through the 220 kV line is now complete. He noted that this development will not only stabilize voltage across the national grid but also bolster the reliability of Nepal’s power supply.
Ghising further shared that the under-construction Markee Chowk-Bharatpur section of the Marsyangdi Corridor Transmission Line Project is on track for completion by mid-June 2025. Once operational, it will enable electricity generated in the Marsyangdi corridor to be supplied to Bharatpur.
The Marsyangdi-Kathmandu Transmission Line Project was financed through a combination of investments from the Government of Nepal and NEA, supported by a grant from the Norwegian government and a concessional loan from the Asian Development Bank.
