Aziz and Driss Fatouh, the Dutch nationals of Moroccan origin, travelled to a Shilajit mining site in a remote North-Western part of Nepal a month ago.
Despite having to navigate rugged landscapes during their journey to Malikabota in Kanaka Sundari Rural Municipality, Jumla district, the trip to the site situated at an altitude of 3,500 metres offered breathtaking scenery, the brothers said.
Shilajit, a natural substance primarily found in the mountainous regions of Nepal, India, and Tibet, is highly valued for its medicinal and therapeutic properties. It is known for a variety of health benefits, including boosting energy and stamina, supporting heart health, and enhancing cognitive function. It holds great significance in traditional medicine, particularly in Ayurveda.
Moreover, Shilajit’s rich cultural history and growing popularity as a wellness supplement have solidified its status as a natural power booster.
Soraj Shahi, who served as the local resource person during the tavel, told NBA that the journey was all about adventure and discovery.
It was surreal to experience not only the beauty of the landscape but also the ancient process of mining this precious substance, which took us to the high mountains of Nepal, they said.
“Working with the miners was an eye-opening experience,” the travellers said. “Their connection to the land and deep knowledge of Shilajit mining was truly inspiring.”
The trip made me realise that travelling is not just about seeing places, but about experiencing them deeply—through their people, their history, and their natural resources, Shahi added.
The trio highly recommend the journey, but with a caution, “it’s not for the faint-hearted”.
