Flight operations at Suketar Airport in Taplejung have been suspended for over two weeks due to adverse weather conditions. No flights have taken off or landed at the airport since June 13.
Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC) had only resumed flights to the airport in the far-eastern hilly district in mid-April following a four-month suspension. However, operations were again halted just weeks later due to poor visibility and dense fog, following the onset of the monsoon season.
According to Narayan Kumar Karki, Station In-charge of NAC Taplejung, four scheduled flights since June 15 have been cancelled. “Visibility has been too low to operate safely,” he said.
The disruption has left many passengers, particularly those travelling to Kathmandu, stranded. Karki expressed concern that ongoing uncertainty could lead to a drop in passenger numbers.
Each year, monsoon-related weather conditions severely impact air travel to Taplejung, renewing calls from locals for improved and reliable road infrastructure to ensure year-round connectivity.
