An estimated two million people across Nepal are likely to be affected by disasters triggered by the upcoming monsoon this year, according to the latest government assessment.
The 32nd meeting of the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Executive Committee, chaired by Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, made the assessment on Tuesday. The meeting also approved the Monsoon Preparedness and Response National Action Plan, 2082 BS , based on data from the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) reported that approximately 457,145 households, or 1,997,731 individuals, could be impacted by monsoon-related disasters this year. The authority further estimated that 10 percent of the affected population may require rescue and relief support.
According to NDRRMA spokesperson Ram Bahadur KC, the action plan outlines responsibilities for relevant ministries and agencies in preparing for and responding to disasters. It also includes contact details for emergency coordination, an inventory of necessary materials, and a list of trained human resources available for deployment.
The meeting also reviewed past decisions, including the implementation status of the Emergency Warehouse Operation Procedure, 2081 BS (First Amendment) , and the National Strategic Action Plan for Disaster Risk Reduction (2018–2030) . Proposals related to managing the natural flow of the Bagmati River at Chobhar gorge were also discussed.
KC said the action plan provides for monthly monitoring, evaluation, and review of disaster response efforts throughout the monsoon season.
The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has forecast extreme rainfall this year, along with a lower minimum and higher maximum temperature. Based on these forecasts, the NDRRMA developed the national disaster response plan in consultation with stakeholders and relevant agencies. -- RSS
