The government has formed a three-member committee to recommend a candidate for the position of the governor of Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB). A cabinet meeting held on Monday decided to establish the committee under the leadership of Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel. Former NRB Governor Bijaya Nath Bhattarai and economist Bishwo Poudel are the other members of the committee.
The government had appointed Maha Prasad Adhikari as the 17th governor of NRB on April 6, 2020. His five-year term ends on April 5 2025.
The cabinet also formed a recommendation committee for the appointment of the chairpersons and members of the Commission of Investigation on Enforced Disappeared Persons and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. This committee is led by former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Om Prakash Mishra. Its members include former Attorney General Khamma Bahadur Khati, Arjun Karki, Stela Tamang, and the chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission or their designated representative.
The formation of the committee follows discussions among top leaders of the three major political parties on transitional justice. As per legal provisions, office-bearers for both commissions must be recommended within two months of the committee’s formation.
Additionally, the cabinet decided that a delegation led by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli will participate in the sixth BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok, Thailand, from April 1-5. The delegation will include Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba, according to Minister for Communications and Information Technology Prithvi Subba Gurung.
