Cross-border UPI transactions processed through the Fonepay network have crossed the one million mark.
Fonepay, Nepal’s largest payment network, is licensed and regulated by Nepal Rastra Bank as a Payment System Operator (PSO).
The milestone marks a major step forward in enabling Indian users to make secure, seamless, and real-time payments while in Nepal, Fonepay said in a statement.
Indian tourists are increasingly adopting digital payment technologies for cross-border transactions. Many are now using UPI-enabled apps to scan Fonepay QR codes to make payments.
“The success of this interoperable system reflects growing trust in digital alternatives for cross-border travel, commerce, and personal spending,” read the statement.
Fonepay also reported that the total UPI transaction volume has exceeded Rs 2 billion.
The company attributed the growth in UPI transactions to broader merchant acceptance, a steady increase in Indian tourist arrivals, and the ease of interoperable QR-based payments.
Fonepay’s network now covers all 77 districts of Nepal, with over 100,000 merchants nationwide.
Top-performing merchant categories included restaurants and eateries, grocery stores, and hotels and resorts. Kathmandu, Kaski, and Kailali were the leading districts in terms of transaction volume.
“Surpassing one million UPI transactions is a testament to the trust and adoption shown by Indian customers toward digital payments in Nepal,” said Diwas Kumar Sapkota, CEO of Fonepay.
Fonepay added that it plans to further enhance cross-border payment services and improve the user experience in the coming days.
