The death toll from the recent monsoon-induced disaster has climbed to 244 nationwide, with Kavre district suffering the highest number of casualties at 77. Additionally, 19 people are still missing following last week's floods and landslides towards the end of the monsoon season.
According to Rishiram Tiwari, spokesperson for the Ministry of Home Affairs, 179 people were injured in disaster-related incidents, and 17,174 individuals have been rescued from the affected areas. Efforts to mobilize relief support and repair damaged highways and roads are ongoing, he added.
Financial aid for temporary housing will be distributed once local authorities provide detailed lists of survivors. Tiwari noted that food rations and other immediate relief have already been provided at the local level. The government has released Rs 200,000 in financial support to each of the families who lost their loved ones, with 160 families receiving this aid so far through the District Disaster Management Fund.
In Kavre, the toll has been particularly severe, with 77 deaths, including one foreign national, and 75 others injured. The District Police Office reports that five people are still missing. The deceased include 33 women, 28 men, nine boys, and seven girls.
Assistant Chief District Officer Subas Paudel stated that search efforts for the missing are underway, and relief support is being provided to affected families. Areas such as Panauti municipality, where 18 people died, and other rural municipalities like Temal, Roshi, Bethanchowk, and Mandandeupur have all faced significant losses. The government continues its relief efforts, aiming to support the hardest-hit regions as they recover from this devastating disaster. -- RSS
