The District Court Chitwan has sent former Home Minister and Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) President Rabi Lamichhane to custody on charge of embezzling the funds of Chitwan-based Sahara Multi-purpose Cooperative Limited.
Lamichhane was sent to custody as his detention hearing remained incomplete on Wednesday.
Registrar at Chitwan District Court Bishnu Acharya shared that Lamichhane was handed over to the police as the hearing on whether or not to keep him in detention for investigation did not conclude.
The court handed over Lamichhane to the police with instructions to present him before the court at 10.00 am on Thursday.
The Government Attorney’s Office Chitwan had filed a case against 15 persons, including Lamichhane, on Tuesday for their alleged involvement in the cooperative funds scam.
Meanwhile, the Office of the Attorney General has formed nn investigation committee to study the charge sheet filed by the District Attorney’s Office, Chitwan for not prosecuting RSP President Lamichhane under organized crime and money laundering charges.
The District Attorney’s Office, Chitwan filed fraud case against Lamichhane and others for embezzling the savings of Sahara Multi-Purpose Cooperative while a case of organized crime and money laundering was filed against 12 people.
The Kathmandu-based Office of the Attorney General formed a four-member probe committee to study the prosecution forwarded by the Chitwan District Attorney's Office. OAG argued that the charge sheet prepared by the Chitwan District Attorney Office's was flawed, warranting investigation.
The members of the probe committee headed by Deputy Attorney General Gopal Prasad Rijal are Joint Attorney General Surya Raj Dahal and Joint Attorney General Ishwari Prasad Dhakal while Assistant Attorney Rudra Prasad Acharya serves as the member secretary of the probe committee. -- RSS
