Police on Sunday (September 22) arrested Durga Prasai, who has been mired in controversies in recent years, for alleged cyber crime.
Prasai, also the Executive Director at Jhapa-based B & C Medical College, was taken into custody by a team from Cyber Bureau from his residence in Bhaktapur, Central Spokesperson for Nepal Police SSP Dan Bahadur Karki told NBA.
“Prasai has been arrested on the charge of cyber crime” Karki added.
Last Wednesday (September 18), the Kathmandu District Court had issued an arrest warrant against Prasai.
Prasai first came into the limelight for his closeness with political leaders such as CPN-UML’s KP Sharma Oli and CPN- Maoist Centre’s Chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal.
A photo of the trio having a lavish lunch, which included Jumli Marshi, a red rice variety, at Prasai’s residence had gone viral on social media some years ago.
However, the trio's relationship has turned sour over the years.

Dr Govinda KC’s countless hunger strikes against the government’s attempts to grant affiliation to Prasai’s college to run the MBBS programme also kept him in the spotlight.
Earlier in March this year, the Supreme Court directed the Medical Education Commission and Kathmandu University to grant affiliation to the B&C Medical College.
Besides the medical education sector, Prasai has also got himself involved in controversial campaigns ‘for protection of the nation, culture and religion’ and ‘to liberate debtors from paying the bank loans’.
Prasai’s act of calling and harassing the banks’ top level employees had also gone viral on social media.
Moreover, Prasai, who was once close to pro-republican leaders like Oli and Dahal, joined hands with pro-royalists and supporters of the right wing politics, allegedly to gain support for his controversial decisions.
Prasai has been taken to the Cyber Bureau of Nepal Police at Bhotahiti, according to SSP Karki.
