After experiencing snowfall and rainfall in various regions due to a western low-pressure system during the weekend, most areas in Nepal are forecast to experience fair weather from today, December 29. The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology shared this update in an early morning bulletin on Sunday.
The state-run national news agency RSS reported citing the department that the hill regions of Koshi Province are expected to be partly cloudy, while light snowfall is predicted in some upper hills and mountainous areas of Karnali, Gandaki, and Koshi provinces, as well as one to two locations in Sudurpaschim and Bagmati Provinces. Additionally, light rain is likely in a few places across the hill regions of the country, RSS added.
Earlier, the Weather Forecasting Division had issued a special bulletin warning of the impacts of a westerly disturbance starting Friday evening. The system brought partly to generally cloudy conditions across the country, light to moderate snowfall in high hills and mountainous regions of Sudurpaschim and Karnali Provinces, and some high-altitude areas of Gandaki, Bagmati, and Koshi Provinces. Light rainfall occurred in various parts, and temperatures dropped further due to this weather pattern.
Climate expert Binod Pokharel noted that the disturbance, carrying moisture from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal, produced thunderstorms in north-west India and caused heavy snowfall in the mountainous areas of Karnali and Sudurpaschim Provinces.
Although the entire country witnessed cloudy weather on Saturday, only Sudurpaschim and Karnali provinces received rainfall as of Saturday evening, according to Pokharel, who is an associate professor at Tribhuvan University’s Central Department of Hydrology and Meteorology.
