Farmers in Madhes Province have harvested 1.5 million tonnes of paddy so far this fiscal year, marking a notable increase from the 1.29 million tonnes produced last fiscal year, according to the state-owned news agency RSS.
The surge in production is attributed to the expansion of paddy acreage by 5,200 hectares and favorable conditions, including timely rainfall during transplantation and growing seasons, along with the availability of fertilisers and seeds, said Agricultural Extension Officer Roshan Kumar Mehta.
The province also recorded an improvement in rice yield per hectare, rising from 3.5 tonnes in 2023/24 to 4 tonnes in 2024/25.
Saptari and Rautahat districts reported the highest and lowest production at over 261,100 tonnes and nearly 150,500 tonnes, respectively.
Production figures for the remaining six districts are: around 209,500 tonnes in Siraha; 184,750 tonnes in Parsa; 182,160 tonnes in Sarlahi; 180,300 tonnes in Bara; 167,770 tonnes in Mahottari; and 166,260 tonnes in Dhanusha, according to RSS.
