Goats, sheep and buffaloes worth more than Rs 160 million were sold in Jumla district alone this Dashain.
Bir Bahadur Rawal, Chief of the Livestock Development Section at Chandannath Municipality, told RSS, the state-owned news agency, that goats, sheep and buffaloes worth Rs 163.23 million were sold at Khalanga town alone during the festival this year.
The sale of such animals and fowls is generally high during this time of the year with an increase in consumption of meat. People also sacrifice such animals at various shrines during the festival.
While 7,928 sheep and goats were supplied by district farmers, others were imported from neighbouring districts.
Sheep worth Rs 152.32 million, goats worth Rs 7.79 million, and buffaloes worth Rs 3.11 million have been sold so far, according to Rawal.
The average price of local sheep was Rs 19,000, with the maximum and minimum prices a sheep was sold being Rs 28,000 and Rs 10,000, respectively.
Similarly, the maximum price of local goat was Rs 24,000 and the minimum price Rs 8,000. The average price was Rs 16,000.
While the maximum and minimum prices of buffalo were Rs 50,000 and Rs 26,000, respectively, the average price was Rs 38,000.
Around 88,000 sheep are being reared in the district, according to the Livestock Service Office, Jumla.
