The government has declared the decade from 2025 to 2035 as the Internal Employment Promotion Decade, aiming to generate more job opportunities within the country. The announcement was made during the inaugural session of the 'National Labor and Employment Conference 2024' organized by the Ministry of Labor, Employment, and Social Security on Monday.
As part of this initiative, the government signed a memorandum of understanding with 10 private sector umbrella organizations to create jobs and provide training for young people. The agreement was signed with the National Skill Development Foundation, the Computer Association of Nepal (CAN) Federation, the Hotel Association of Nepal (HAN), the Federation of Contractors Association of Nepal, the NADA Automobiles Dealers Association (NADA), the Nepal Ready-Made Garment Industry Association, the Grill and Steel Entrepreneurs Federation, the Federation of Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers Association, Accor International Pvt Ltd, Global Qualification, and Motherland Skill Academy.
On the same occasion, the Ministry of Labor, Employment, and Social Security signed an agreement with the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation to expand the Integrated Labor Market Information System under the Prime Minister's Employment Program.
Addressing the conference, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli emphasized the crucial role of the private sector in employment creation. He stated that job creation and entrepreneurship promotion are top government priorities and urged the private sector to take the lead in driving the country's economy.
Similarly, Minister for Labor, Employment, and Social Security Sharat Singh Bhandari highlighted the government's plan to generate employment within the country and ensure that foreign employment remains dignified, disciplined, and safe.
Minister for Industry, Commerce, and Supplies Damodar Bhandari acknowledged the private sector’s contribution to economic growth, even amid risks, and reiterated the government's policy of supporting private-sector-led employment initiatives.
Prime Minister's Economic and Development Advisor Dr. Yuba Raj Khatiwada outlined the government's vision to end the compulsion for foreign employment, promote competitive skill-based manpower in the international labor market, ensure social security in bilateral labor agreements, and eliminate the cycle of repeated migration for foreign jobs.
Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) President Chandra Prasad Dhakal called for the removal of policy ambiguities that discourage private-sector investment.
President of the Joint Trade Union Coordination Centre (JTUCC) Jagat Singh Khadka stressed the need for harmonious labor relations by increasing the minimum wage, ensuring the effective implementation of the social security scheme, and repealing anti-worker provisions in the Labor Act.
The two-day conference will focus on identifying and promoting potential areas for domestic employment generation, enhancing and expanding employment services in Nepal, managing labor migration, leveraging Nepal’s potential in the information technology sector, and utilizing skills and capital gained from foreign employment to boost domestic production and productivity.
Previously, the government organized labor and employment conferences in 1997, 2004, 2013, and 2019. -- RSS
