The Ministry of Health and Population has decided to provide Rs 200,000 to the family of an individual donating organs posthumously.
Bhaktapur-based Human Organ Transplant Centre provides the family of the donor Rs 100,000. On Sunday, November 24, Home Minister Pradip Paudel announced that the amount would be doubled, reported RSS, the state-owned news agency.
In addition, hospitals facilitating organ donations will now receive Rs 75,000 for the service, an increase from Rs 50,000 previously.
The Finance Ministry has approved the increase through internal resource management, reported RSS.
The Human Organ Transplant Centre says it handles around 1,000 kidney and 55 liver transplant requests, and performs 200 kidney and 20 liver transplants every year, accounting for about 70 percent of the total transplants in the country.
Other health facilities including Bir Hospital and Maharajgunj-based Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) have been providing organ transplant services in the country.
