The Ministry of Health and Population has clarified that the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), recently reported China, is a common virus that causes the common cold. The ministry issued a statement on Wednesday addressing misleading information circulating in the media and on social platforms, urging the public not to believe such rumors.
“It is normal for respiratory infections to increase during the winter months. Human Metapneumovirus is not a new virus. It causes the common cold and has been detected in Nepal in the past. Nepal has already developed the necessary capacity for testing, monitoring, and responding to this virus,” the statement said.
The ministry emphasized that the risk of severe complications from HMPV is low. Infections are generally limited to individuals with weakened immune systems, young children, and the elderly. Nevertheless, the Ministry of Health, along with the Department of Health Services, Epidemiology and Disease Control Division, hospitals, and laboratories, has intensified surveillance and awareness efforts.
The ministry urged the public to follow personal safety measures, such as wearing masks, avoiding crowded places, and adhering to public health guidelines. It also advised people to avoid close contact with infected individuals, wash hands regularly with soap and water, and seek medical advice if experiencing health problems.
For consultations, the public is encouraged to contact the Ministry’s Hello Health Call Center at 1115. -- RSS
