The import of electric vehicles in Nepal has increased in the first half of the current fiscal year compared to the same period last year.
According to the foreign trade data released by the Department of Customs on Monday, Nepal imported 5,460 units of electric vehicles worth Rs 13.10 billion between mid-July 2024 and mid-January 2025. During the same period last fiscal year, the country imported 5,107 units of EVs worth Rs 12.73 billion.
The data highlights a growing dominance of Chinese electric vehicles in the Nepali market, while imports from India are on a decline. In the first six months of the current fiscal year, 4,205 electric vehicles worth Rs 10.64 billion were imported from China alone. Imports from India amounted to Rs 2.29 billion. Smaller volumes of electric vehicles were imported from Germany (19 units), the United States (4 units), and South Korea (2 units).
In contrast, during the same period last year, Nepal imported 3,121 electric cars and vans worth Rs 8.6 billion from China and 1,922 units worth Rs 3.81 billion from India. Imports from other countries included 39 units from South Korea, 17 from Indonesia, 5 from Germany, and 3 from the United States.
