More than 200 climbers have received permits to ascend Sagarmatha (Mt Everest), the world’s tallest peak, this spring season.
According to the Department of Tourism, a total of 214 climbers—178 men and 38 women—from 22 expeditions have been granted permits as of Thursday. These climbers, representing 31 countries including Nepal, began receiving permissions from the end of March and have since been heading toward the mountain.
Department Director Aarati Neupane said climbers are currently en route to their destinations. So far, the Department has issued expedition permits for 17 peaks, including Mt Everest.
As per the latest data, mountaineering activities have contributed Rs 365.815 million in royalties to the government. Of this, Rs 316.986 million was collected from Everest permits alone.
In total, 497 climbers—398 men and 99 women from 54 expeditions—have obtained permits to climb various mountains this season.
Meanwhile, the route through the Khumbu Icefall has been opened. The Department confirmed that the 'icefall doctors' have completed rope fixing and prepared the path for climbers through this critical section of the Everest ascent. -- RSS
