Floods and landslides in late September claimed 79 lives in Kavrepalanchowk district and caused significant damage to property, leaving many homeless. Despite over a month of search, rescue, and relief efforts, rehabilitation has stalled due to insufficient details of the extent of damage. The District Administration Office, Kavre reports that local governments have yet to provide full damage assessments, even 40 days after the disaster.
A District Disaster Management Committee meeting decided to provide Rs 15,000 per family, or Rs 20,000 for larger families, under the Disaster Victims Rescue and Relief (Seventh Amendment) Standards 2077 BS. However, the relief program has been delayed due to the lack of specific data.
Efforts are ongoing to collect data for rehabilitation and house reconstruction in Panauti Municipality, Bethanchowk, and Roshi rural municipalities. These areas, among the 13 local governments in the district, have suffered significant damage and lack essential infrastructure.
Roshi Rural Municipality Chair Dinesh Lama stated that data collection is near completion, with 350 houses fully destroyed by floods and landslides. Panauti has seen about 700 completely damaged houses, and Bethanchowk Rural Municipality is gathering data on the families whose homes and land were washed away. Preliminary estimates suggest that around 4,000 private homes in the district were completely destroyed, and 7,000 suffered partial damage. Additionally, over 30 government and public buildings have been fully damaged. -- RSS
