An Air Arabia aircraft overshot while attempting to land at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu on Thursday afternoon due to adverse weather although the condition has improved since Friday.
TIA Spokesperson Rinji Sherpa said the plane, which was about to land, suddenly overshot over Narephant due to a missed approach following 'wind shear.'
Similarly, an Air India flight from New Delhi to Kathmandu was put on hold in the air over Simara due to adverse weather before landing at TIA later on Thursday. A Thai Airways flight also had to hold mid-air for some time.
On Wednesday, several flights were delayed due to low visibility. A Nepal Airlines flight from Narita, Japan; a Qatar Airways flight; an Air India flight from New Delhi; a Batik Air flight from Kuala Lumpur; and a Fly Dubai plane were all held in the sky before landing. Domestic flights were also affected, with a Buddha Air flight from Dhangadhi and a Yeti Airlines flight from Pokhara experiencing similar delays.
Flights across the country have been disrupted over the past week due to low visibility caused by adverse weather conditions, according to TIA. Spokesperson Sherpa noted that international flights have been particularly affected due to increasing pre-monsoon activity and developing weather systems bringing rainfall to Nepal.
Light to moderate rainfall occurred in various parts of the country, including Kathmandu Valley, on Wednesday night. Rainfall was mainly recorded in Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces. On Thursday, the hill regions of these provinces experienced partly cloudy conditions, with light to moderate rain accompanied by lightning and thunder in the afternoon.
However, the Meteorological Forecasting Division has predicted improved weather conditions from Friday, with largely fair skies and only partly to generally cloudy conditions in the hill areas.
