The 82-megawatt (MW) Lower Solu Khola Hydropower Project is nearing completion, with 95 percent of physical works completed.
The project, located in Tingla, Solukhumbu, is being developed by Lower Solu Hydropower Company Ltd. Key construction components, including the powerhouse, headrace tunnel, and installation of turbines and generators, have been completed. According to company manager Dharmendra Gotame, the breakthrough of the penstock pipe tunnel is expected soon.
"We are planning to commence commercial operation by July," Gotame said.
The associated transmission line has achieved 80 percent progress. The project began in September 2016 and is being developed with Rs 16 billion in project financing, including loans from the European Bank (International Funding Agency) and FMO. Completion is targeted before September 2025.
The project is a run-of-river hydropower scheme with a regulated flow, utilizing a diversion weir constructed at Salme in Solukhumbu. Water is conveyed through a headrace tunnel to the powerhouse at Bhadaure in Tingla, approximately six kilometers from the intake.
The total project cost is expected to rise due to challenging terrain and the length of the tunnel.
Currently, 700 workers are engaged in the project, including local residents who have secured employment.
Once operational, the project will contribute 23 MW to the national grid during the dry season and 82 MW during the monsoon when river discharge is higher. -- RSS
