The main ritual Chhath festival is being observed on Thursday, November 7, by worshipping and making offerings to the setting sun. The festival will conclude after worshipping the rising Sun on Friday morning.
Dedicated to the Sun God, Chhath is observed for four days from the fourth day of the waxing moon in the month of Kartik (Kartik Shukla Chaturthi) as per the lunar calendar. It usually falls in the month of October or November as per the Gregorian calendar.
Worshipping the Sun, considered as the god of energy and of the life-force, is believed to enhance prosperity and progress, and fulfil one’s wishes.
Devotees take bath in the nearby river or rivulets, observe fasting, and worship the setting and rising sun by making offerings.
Though Chhath used to be celebrated mostly across the Tarai region, the festival has gained popularity in the hilly districts including the Kathmandu Valley in recent years. Arrangements have been made at Ranipokhari, Gaurighat, Kupondole and Bishnumati among other places to observe the festival.
