National Assembly member Dr Anjan Shakya has been elected to the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Standing Committee on Sustainable Development, representing the Asia-Pacific region.
Her election took place during the IPU’s 150th Assembly, currently underway in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan. The Assembly, which began on Saturday, April 5, will run through April 9.
Dr Shakya secured her seat by defeating candidates from the Maldives and Iran, becoming the first Nepali parliamentarian ever elected to this key IPU committee.
She currently serves on the Development, Economic Affairs, and Good Governance Committee of the National Assembly and also leads its Sustainable Development Sub-Committee as coordinator.
According to the IPU, “Our Committee on Sustainable Development works to improve the lives and well-being of the world’s citizens and the planet. It does this through the issues of fair trade, protection of the environment, financing for development and other questions that impact on the way our world evolves.”
The Nepali delegation to the IPU Assembly is led by Devraj Ghimire, Speaker of the House of Representatives.
