Service seekers across the country faced disruptions in registering and obtaining national identity cards due to a technical issue with the National Identity Card Management Server on Tuesday and Wednesday. According to the Department of National Identity Cards and Registration, the software service was restored on Wednesday afternoon after approximately 30 hours of downtime. The server, which went down on Tuesday morning, was brought back online at around 3 p.m. on Wednesday.
Due to the outage, services related to the collection of national identity card details and card distribution were halted. The department’s National Identity Card Management Branch had issued separate notices on Tuesday and Wednesday, informing the public that the National Identity Card Management System was undergoing maintenance.
Sanubabu Adhikari, Director of the department’s Social Security Branch, stated that the issue was detected at around 9 a.m. on Tuesday, and after maintenance work, the system resumed operations by 3 p.m. on Wednesday.
“The server of the National Identity Card Management Information System was under maintenance, causing a disruption in services related to national identity card details collection and card distribution. This notice was issued for the convenience of service seekers. We apologize for the inconvenience and assure that the service will resume as soon as possible,” the department stated in its public notice.
A technical team investigated the issue and completed the repairs on Wednesday. According to officials, the server crashed due to heavy traffic on the software. Discussions are underway to increase the server’s capacity to prevent similar disruptions in the future.
The issue also affected the operations of the Department of Passports, which had to function offline during the outage. The department stated that all offline transactions were updated online as soon as the system was restored on Wednesday afternoon.
