Nepal has beefed up security in border areas and airports in response to escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. A meeting of the Central Security Committee, chaired by Minister for Home Affairs Ramesh Lekhak on Wednesday, decided to increase surveillance in sensitive areas to safeguard national security.
According to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA), the committee assessed recent developments in the region and their potential impact on Nepal’s internal security.
"One of the key decisions was to place security agencies on high alert and intensify surveillance at the Nepal-India border and at airports," said MoHA Spokesperson Ramchandra Tiwari.
The meeting also discussed the safety of Nepalis residing in India and Pakistan. It underscored the need for enhanced internal security measures, improved coordination among security agencies, and increased information-sharing.
Following the committee’s decision, security provisions have been stepped up across major border points. In Dhanusha district, surveillance has been tightened in Jatahi and Bhittamod, with both Nepali and Indian security forces increasing patrols. "We are verifying individuals' identities and their travel purposes at these crossings," said Krishna Dhakal, Deputy Inspector General of the Armed Police Force (APF) stationed at the Chhinnamasta Barrack.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Pramod Raya, deployed at the Jatahi checkpoint, confirmed increased vigilance. "We have upped security surveillance in view of the sensitivity of the area," he said. Officials clarified that although there is no direct threat to Nepal, the measures are precautionary due to the strategic importance of the border.
Heightened security has affected daily life in bordering areas, with local markets experiencing reduced activity due to restricted movement. In Rupandehi district, APF operations have intensified at Belahiya, Lumbini, and Bhagawanpur checkpoints, where sniffer dogs have also been deployed.
Authorities maintain that these measures are temporary and aimed at ensuring public safety amid heightened regional tensions. -- RSS
