In a historic first, Nepal is set to host the ‘Everest Summiteers Summit’ on May 27, bringing together climbers from around the world who have reached the top of the world—Mount Everest.
Organized by Everest Alliance Nepal, the event aims to foster a global community of Everest summiteers, provide a platform for experience-sharing, and promote adventure tourism in the region. According to Alliance Chair Sudarshan Nepal, 177 climbers from 16 countries have already confirmed their participation, and organizers expect a turnout of up to 500 Everest summiteers from across the globe.
One of the summit’s highlights will be a special tribute to Kanchha Sherpa, the last surviving member of the legendary 1953 expedition. Kanchha Sherpa accompanied Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa on their pioneering ascent of Everest, marking a pivotal moment in mountaineering history, reported Nepal’s state-owned RSS news agency.
Beyond celebration and camaraderie, the event will delve into pressing environmental concerns. A major focus will be climate change and its impact on mountain ecosystems, with panel discussions featuring representatives from WWF, ICIMOD, IUCN, and other conservation organizations.
The summit has received strong backing from key tourism and mountaineering bodies, including the Nepal Association of Tour and Travel Agents (NATTA), the Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN), the Nepal Mountaineering Association, and the Hotel Association of Nepal.
