Nepal's public debt has reached Rs 2,536.13 billion as of mid-January 2025, according to the latest report released by the Tripureshwar-based Public Debt Management Office in for the current fiscal year 2024/25.
According to the report, the total public debt, which stood at Rs 2,434.9 billion at the beginning of the fiscal year, increased by Rs 102.3 billion in the six months.
The public debt now accounts for 44.46 percent of Nepal's gross domestic product (GDP). The report noted that changes in the exchange rate have contributed to an additional Rs 119.61 billion in public debt liabilities by mid-January. Of the total public debt, 51.31 percent is attributed to foreign debt, while 48.68 percent is domestic debt.
For the fiscal year 2024/25, Nepal has set a target to mobilize Rs 547 billion in public debt, of which Rs 240.8 billion had been received by mid-January 2025, amounting to 43.89 percent of the annual target. The internal and external debt contributions to this amount were 54.86 percent and 27.20 percent, respectively.
The budget for debt servicing in the current fiscal year is Rs 402.85 billion, of which Rs 182.4 billion had been utilized by mid-January, representing 45.28 percent of the annual allocation.
