June 15: Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) is modifying prevailing paper notes. NRB has already circulated modified paper note of denomination 100 in the market from Monday, June 13. Additionally, the central bank has initiated procedure to modify paper notes of other denominations as well. The modified Rs 100 note has symbol of mother and baby Rhinoceros. Earlier, there was only mother Rhinoceros in the Rs 100 note.
Similarly, NRB is planning to modify paper notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000. “The process has already been initiated,” informs Trilochan Pangeni, Spokesperson of NRB. He adds “Structure of other modifying notes, however, has not been set.”
NRB is inserting image of couple elephant in the modified form of Rs 1000 which had only one elephant in the earlier version. NRB, the sole note issuer of Nepal, is modifying quality of paper notes along with the images of animals. Apart from this, the notes will enforce signature of current Governor of NRB Dr Chiranjibi Nepal. It will be the first note to have signature of Governor Nepal.
According to the preparations of NRB, Rs 500 paper notes will now inflict tiger’s image, habitat in Nepal. Nepali paper notes usually feature Nepali culture, environment and heritages. Although there were animals images in previous paper notes, there sources were not revealed in the notes itself. However, the modified notes will have authentic images of Nepali animals.
Spokesperson Pangeni says that the paper notes are being modified as per the new context of Nepal. “All paper notes are in modification process. However, paper notes of other denominations are in design finalisation process,” he informs. Decisions of paper notes modification are executed by Note Design Committee of NRB.
The paper notes of denominations 100, 500 and 1000 are being modified as per the decision of the committee. The Note Design Committee consists of representatives of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation Department, Culturists and NRB. NRB prints paper notes of denominations 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1000; meanwhile, it has stopped printing of denominations 1, 2 and 25.
