The 16th meeting of the Medical Education Commission, chaired by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli at Singha Durbar on Friday, February 7, decided to provide resident doctors at private medical colleges with a living allowance equal to that of their counterparts in government institutions.
According to state-owned news agency RSS, resident doctors in private colleges will now receive a monthly allowance of Rs 48,700, up from the current Rs 20,000.
The decision was made despite objections from Prof Dr. Gyanendra Man Singh Karki, Chairman of the Association of Medical and Dental Colleges of Nepal, who urged the government to postpone the decision until procedural matters were finalized.
The allowance disparity had sparked protests from postgraduate medical students demanding equal treatment.
The meeting also discussed the need to amend the National Medical Education Act, 2018, according to the Prime Minister’s Secretariat.
