With the onset of Ramadan, there has been a noticeable increase in foot traffic at a market near Jame Masjid in Kathmandu, where people are purchasing dry fruits and other festive delicacies.
Fasting during Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam. The fast begins with Sehri, the pre-dawn meal, usually consumed an hour before sunrise, and is broken after sunset with Iftar, which typically includes fruits and sweets. Charity and helping the poor and needy are also central practices during this holy month.
