Vehicular traffic along the East-West Highway in Nawalparasi (East) has been diverted to alternative routes following the collapse of a bridge over the Binayi rivulet on Friday, January 10.
The 246-meter bridge was damaged when a 60-tonne capacity lorry, loaded with goods belonging to Shivam Cement, attempted to cross it. The lorry, which had departed from Krishnanagar Customs, is now stuck on the remains of the broken bridge.
Chief District Officer of Nawalparasi (East), Arun Pokhrel, informed state-owned news agency RSS that immediate repairs to the bridge are not feasible.
To address the disruption, vehicles stranded in Dumkibas, Binayi Triveni Rural Municipality, have been directed to use alternative routes until a temporary diversion can be constructed.
One of the alternative routes is a 5 km detour through the inner roads via Jyamire. Suitable for smaller vehicles, it passes through Triveni Crusher and reconnects with the Highway at Gumba Chowk.
The second one, for the heavy vehicles, is an 18 km detour. Beginning at Jyamire Petrol Pump, it passes through CG Chowk, Dandajor, and Hongshi Gate, before rejoining the highway.
