Veteran journalist Bhairab Risal passed away on Sunday evening, April 6, at the age of 97.
Risal breathed his last at Frontline Hospital in Purano Baneshwor, Kathmandu, where he was undergoing treatment for heart and lung-related complications, according to his brother, Puru Risal. His death was confirmed by the state-owned news agency RSS, where he had served for many years as chief reporter.
Born in Tikathali, Bhaktapur, Risal had a long and distinguished career in journalism and literature. He authored several notable books, including ‘Sadhulai Suli’, ‘Logne Swasni’, ‘Kehi Mitraka Chithi’, and ‘Bhairav Dai’.
In keeping with his wishes, Risal’s body was donated to Patan Hospital for medical research and study.
Risal hosted ‘Uhile Bajeka Palama’ programme in Radio Sagarmatha, South Asia’s first independent community radio station, launched in 1997, for many years. The programme resonated deeply with listeners across generations.
Throughout his life, he was honored with several accolades, particularly for his contributions to human rights and environmental causes.
Risal is survived by his wife, two sons, and two daughters.
