World Wetlands Day 2025 is being observed on Sunday under the theme “Protecting Wetlands for Our Common Future”. The day is marked with various programs to raise awareness about wetland conservation and restoration.
The United Nations designated February 2 as World Wetlands Day in 2021 to commemorate the adoption of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands in 1971 in Ramsar, Iran. The convention, ratified by 172 countries, promotes wetland conservation and sustainable use through protected areas, policy implementation, and knowledge exchange.
Ten wetland sites in Nepal have been enlisted in the Ramsar List: Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve, Rara Lake, Mai Pokhari, Phoksundo Lake, Bisahajari Lake, Ghodaghodi Lake, Gosainkunda Lake, Gokyo Lake, Jagdishpur Reservoir, and the Pokhara Valley lake cluster.
Wetlands cover about five percent of Nepal's total land area, spanning over 819,000 hectares.
