NEA (Nepal Electricity Authority) has taken back the controversial decision of upgrading the Upper Trishuli 3A on June 12 out of sheer pressure from several groups. A meeting chaired by Energy Minister Umakanta Jha took the withdrawal decision to prevent the further outrage. NEA had decided to upgrade the project from existing 60 MW to 90 MW on May 31. Trade unions at NEA had launched series of protests against the decision. ‘’The project will be continued with the existing capacity without any further delay’’, said NEA member Laxman Agrawal.
Meanwhile, a day after the withdrawal decision, FNCCI (Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry) condemned the NEA’s decision. Issuing a press statement, FNCCI called the act immature. ‘’The government had to assess all aspects before taking any decision, It is not appropriate that the government keeps changing its decision under the influence of some people,” reads the statement. FNCCI said that the government should have acted more maturely earlier regarding the project.
