September 8: Former Deputy Governor of Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) and microfinance pioneer in Nepal Dr Harihar Dev Panta passed away on Tuesday.
Panta founded the Nirdhan Utthan Bank limited (NUBL), a bank to work for the upliftment of the poor.
Panta established a microfinance, NGO-Nirdhan in 1991, and later upgraded it to a bank.
The bank (established in 1998) is the first of its kind in Nepal. The microfinance programme in Nepal was inspired by the success of Grameen Bank in Bangladesh.
Panta (73) was Chairman of the Board of Directors since January 2007 at Nirdhan Utthan Bank Limited and Chief Executive Officer from 1998.
He is survived by two sons and a daughter.
