Minimum fare for public transport Rs 13, soon
September 10: The department of transport has decided to slash the minimum fare for public vehicles by Rs 2.
A meeting of Department of Transport Management (DoTM) officials, consumer rights activists and transport operators on Wednesday agreed to to fix the fare at 13 rupees. However, the decision needs to be approved by Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport (MoPIT).
The new fare has been fixed as per the government’s fare policy, says rights activist Premlal Maharjan.
The decision comes amid growing calls for a reduction in transport fares in view of the decline in fuel prices. Since February 8, the fuel prices have decreased by 25 percent.
According to the government’s scientific fare rates determination mechanism, the government needs to reduce the fare by at least Rs 4, he added.
President of Federation of Nepal National Transport Entrepreneurs, Dinesh Bhandari assured that action would be taken against those who over-charge passengers.
Currently, the minimum fare for public transport is Rs 15.
