A hotel and several houses were swept away by a flood at Thame village in Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality-5, Solukhumbu on Friday.

Mingma Sherpa, Chairman of the rural municipality, suspected that Friday’s incident might have been caused by the glacial lake outburst floods (GLOF) in the Thame region. However, the authorities concerned have not confirmed it yet.

Chief District Officer of Solukhumbu Devi Pandey informed that the water level has risen in the Dudh Koshi River, one of the seven major tributaries of Saptakoshi River.

The administration has urged caution to people living downstream, near the banks of Dudh Koshi, to stay safe.

“Security officials from Namche have been sent to Thame to carry out the rescue works,” said Pandey.

It takes around five hours, on foot, to reach the affected area from Namche, according to Lamakaji Sherpa, a local.

The details of the incident are yet to come.

The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, through a notice, has urged caution for residents close to Dudh Koshi below the Jorsalle area to stay safe until further notice.
