Poultry farms have hiked the prices of eggs with the growth in demand since last week.
The egg consumption across the country declines in Shrawan (mid-July to mid-August) as many people, especially the Hindus, observe fasting and avoid eggs and non-vegetarian diet throughout the month.
Farmers say the demand has surged after the ending of Shrawan.
We have raised the prices after as the demand has increased with the onset of the month of Bhadra, said Binod Pokharel, Executive Director at Daunne Agro Farm in Chitwan. It has set the price at Rs 500 per crate ( 30 eggs).
While the price for a large egg has been fixed at Rs 495 per crate, a medium egg will now cost consumers Rs 425 per crate.
The farms have been setting the prices themselves following the instruction of the Department of Commercial Supply and Consumer Protection that only the producers should set the price.
Similarly, the Himchuli Poultry Farm has also increased the price of extra large eggs by Rs 5 per crate and that of large and medium sized eggs by Rs 10 per crate, according to Rajendra Lamichhane, chairman of the farm.
Pokharel, also the President of Nepal Layers Poultry Association, mentioned that the continuous loss in business has displaced around 75% poultry farmers.
Poultry trader Trilochan Kandel, former president of Chitwan Industry Association, claimed that the demand for eggs has increased but the production has decreased.
The production has gone down from 2.5 to 2.6 million to 2.3 to 2.4 million in about two months, Kandel added.
